Raipur. Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Wednesday okayed the proposal to call a special session of the Chhattisgarh Assembly on December 1 to hike the tribal quota from 20to 32 percent.

Earlier on November 9 CM bhupesh Baghel has sent a proposal to Speaker Charandas Mahant requesting him to convene a two-day special session of the State Assembly to discuss the same.

Later in the evening Governor Uikey issued the notification to hold a special Assembly session to discuss on the reservation issue.

'Baghel has assured tribal communities that his government will leave no stone unturned to provide them the benefit of 32 percent quota' an official statement said.

The Chhattisgarh government's decision to convene the special session is significant as resentment was brewing among tribal communities over the reservation issue.

"The provisions made in the constitution for the welfare of the tribals and to protect their interest are being followed in Chhattisgarh. It is our clear intention to ensure tribals enjoy all their constitutional rights provisioned in the constitution" an official statement said.

The Chhattisgarh High Court in September set aside the government's 2012 order to raise the quota to 58 percent in government jobs and admissions in educational institutions and held that reservation exceeding the 50 percent ceiling was unconstitutional.

Following the High Court's decision, the reservation for tribal communities declined to 20% from 32%.

Chhattisgarh Governor Anusuiya Uikey recently wrote a letter to Mr. Baghel asking him to take immediate steps to restore the 32% reservation benefits for tribals. "The Governor had assured full cooperation in the matter," officials earlier said.

As per the information A team of senior State government officials and social workers from Chhattisgarh will soon visit Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to study the legal status of reservation being provided there.
