Raipur. Amidst resentment among tribal communities over the decline in their reservation percentage, Chhattisgarh governor Anusuiya Uikey has come in favour of the new reservation bills proposed to be tabled by the state government during the two-day special session of the state legislative assembly beginning on December one.

A special session of the state legislative assembly regarding ST reservation has been called on December 1-2. The state government is going to introduce two news bills regarding reservation in the session. This statement of the governor came after the statement of government spokesperson and minister Ravindra Choubey, in which he said that after passing the bill in the assembly, we will go to the governor and request him to approve the bill.

"I had written a letter to the chief minister of Chhattisgarh drawing his attention towards the issue of reduction of ST reservation in the state following a High Court order. I told the chief minister in the letter that it is a serious issue which has triggered a public agitation supported by political and social organisations. I also told the chief minister to forget what happened in the High Court and take some immediate steps on the reservation issue. A special session of the assembly should be called to bring a bill. Against this backdrop, the state government has convened a special session. I assured the chief minister of my support in this direction," said the governor while talking to the media on the sidelines of an event organised at the office of the Accountant General in Raipur.

Chhattisgarh High Court in September this year had set aside the Chhattisgarh government's decision to increase reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST) from 20% to 32% and hike the overall reservation quota in the state to 58%, stating that reservations exceeding the 50% ceiling is "unconstitutional".

Following the high court's order of striking down the tribal reservations, various groups within the community have been staging protests demanding the restoration of at least 32% of reservations as provided by the state.

Three days ago the Chhattisgarh cabinet headed by chief minister Bhupesh Baghel approved two amendment bills paving the way for reservation to above 76%, the highest for any state in the country. Officials familiar with the development said the cabinet approved the hike of reservation for OBCs to 27 per cent from the existing 14 per cent, and for the SC community to 13 per cent from 12 per cent in the public employment and admissions. The 32 per cent reservation for the ST category remains unchanged.
