Parliamentary Panel set up to tackle shortage of IAS Officers

The Government of India (GoI) decided to constitute a panel to assess the shortage of IAS Officers and to come up with a recruitment plan for the period from 2021-2030.Department of Personnel Training has approved the constitution of the panel to suggest recruitment of IAS Officers for the short term and long-term.The constituted panel will be tasked with the evaluation of the numbers of required IAS officers over the next 10 years to occupy various designations.

Some estimations put the IAS officers' shortage at over 1500. In total, 5205 IAS officers were occupying positions by January 1, 2019, against the sanctioned strength of 6699. The restriction of 180 officers per year in effect presently is believed to have caused the deficiency.

A parliamentary panel has identified in the departments of personnel, public grievances and Law & Justice, which have already recommended hiking the current limit of 180 officers a year. However, the Parliamentary Panel observed the gap between the authorized strength and the in-position IAS officers is gradually widening in a report tabled in the recently held Parliamentary sess
