Raipur, 30 January 2020 The Congress-led Chhattisgarh government is likely to table a resolution in the state legislative assembly against the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The state cabinet today passed a resolution opposing the Act and urged the Centre to repeal it citing protest against the CAA across the state. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel today wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi making a formal appeal in this regard.

During the ensuing budget session of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, the state government is likely to table a resolution opposing the CAA, state’s parliamentary minister Ravindra Choubey said.

Chhattisgarh is set to become the fifth state to pass a resolution against the Act in the legislative assembly. Two other Congress-ruled states — Rajasthan and Punjab — besides Kerala and West Bengal have already adopted similar resolutions against the Act citing it as “discriminatory”.

Choubey said the Act was against the sentiments of the people of Chhattisgarh and the Chief Minister on behalf of them has urged the PM to take it back.

In his letter, Bhaghel said: “Chhattisgarh is witnessing massive peaceful protests against the Act by different sections of the society. Chhattisgarh originally has inhabitants belonging to scheduled tribes, scheduled caste, OBCs. And a huge chunk of the state’s population live below the poverty line, are landless and illiterate. They might surely face difficulties to accomplish the formalities as required by the Act. The CAA apparently erodes the constitution’s fundamental structure on secularism”
